- This is the doc file for PB ESC Swapped Keyboard Layout
-
- What this file does is simple - drop it in your system file (or on top of
- your system folder) and you will have a selectable keyboard layout that swaps
- the ESC and tilde (`/~) keys. I use this for my Powerbook, as I use the ESC
- key a lot in vi on a unix system, and my fingers expect the ESC key in the
- upper left corner, not by the spacebar. The reason for making this a layout
- instead of a hack is that I also hook up an extended keyboard to my PB -
- there I want the normal settings.
-
- Some tips and caveats:
- First, COMMAND-OPTION-ESC becomes COMMAND-OPTION-TILDE. The system
- looks for the physical keys. This does not distress me very much. A little
- more distressing is QuickKeys - my COMMAND-` to switch apps becomes
- COMMAND-ESC, but the combination feels right, so QuickKeys also using
- physical keys is okay here.
-
- If you aren't an absolute 100% touch typist, CAREFULLY swap the key caps.
- This was really easy - gently pry the key caps up and swap them - the little
- plastic spring has an obvious 'right' orientation.
-
- Make the default layout the one you use the most - most of my time is with
- the extended keyboard, so the defauly layout in the Keyboard control panel is
- "U.S." When I'm on the PB, I hit COMMAND-OPTION-SPACEBAR to switch to the pb
- layout. If you haven't already, enable the finder keyboard menu in the itlb
- resource. This gives you an easy way to see which one you are using.
-
- This is version 1.0, with no future versions seen. It incorporates a decent
- icon, a version resource for get-info, and correctly swaps ALL modifier
- combinations. It also has a readme file for other people to read - I of
- course know what it does.
-
- This is 100% free to use, and may be distributed by anyone (even those cheesy
- catalog shareware companies) in original, unmodified form with this doc
- included.
-
- If you use this, great. Enjoy. all usuall disclaimers apply.
